Logs Import at Guangdong Ports Increase by 40%+ in Jan-Aug of 2014

According to China customs statistics, Guangdong ports totally imported 2,279,000 CBM logs in the first eight months of 2014, increasing by 40.6% compared with same period of last year(same hereinafter). The total import value was 7.51 billion RMB, grew by 80.7%. The average import price was RMB3297 per CBM, rose by 28.4%.



The main characteristics of logs import at Guangdong ports during Jan.-Aug. Of 2014.
1. The monthly import kept an consecutive increase. Since the beginning of this year, the monthly import quantity of logs at guangdong ports kept increasing, compared with same period of last year.  In August, Guangdong ports imported 268,000 CBM logs, increased by 7.7%.

2. General trade mothed was the leading trading method. In the first eight months of 2014, Guangdong ports imported2,265,000 CBM logs by general trade, increased by 41.5%, accounting for 99.4% of the total import quantity of logs at Guangdong ports in that period. Meanwhile, the import quantity by processing trade was 13000 CBM, decreasing by 36.6%.

3.  Africa was the biggest import source. From January to August of 2014, Guangdong  port import 652,000 CBM logs, rose by 36.7%,  accounting for 28.8% of the total  import quantity of logs at Guangdong ports in that period. Therein, 209,000 CBM were from Mozambique, increasing by 24.7%. In the same period, 511, 000 CBM logs were imported from ASEAN , sharply increasing by 3.1 times. And the import quantity from EU was 371000 CBM, slightly reducing by 1%, accounting for 16.3%.

4. Private enterprises were the main import body. In the first eight month of 2014, private enterprises imported 1,623,000 CBM of logs through Guangdong ports, growing by 56.7%, and accounting for 71.2% of the total import quantity of logs at Guangdong ports in that period. At the same time, state-own enterprises and foreign-fund enterprise imported 462,000 CBM and 194,000 respectively, increasing by 17% and 2.3% respectively.

The main reason behind   consecutive increase of logs import at Guangdong ports in the first eight months of 2014 was that the increasing demand of furniture in international market. In the first half of 2014, the real estate market of Europe and America had a a continuing rebound, while there was an increase of furniture demand in emerging markets in Southeast Asia and other region, which generated an increasing demand for furniture export of our country. But the domestic raw materials to make furniture are  expensive and inadequate, while Africa and other log production areas has  abundant  logs with competitive prices, which stimulates the increase of logs import.
